Lefty ace Jon Lester is one of the hottest commodities on the free-agent market this offseason. The Red Sox and the Cubs seem to be leading the charge but the Braves and the Cardinals and perhaps the Yankees and the Blue Jays are lurking as well.
No team needs Lester more than Boston who finished last for the second time in three seasons, but no team could change their perception faster than the Cubs if Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer can sign their old friend. The Blue Jays haven’t been to the postseason since 1993 and now have a very expensive receiver, Russell Martin, to catch Lester. The Braves are using their new stadium and the fact that Lester lives in the neighborhood as an appeal. Then there are the Yankees who who are always comfortable when proposed contracts are in the neighborhood of six years ranging from $130 million to $150 million.
